Exhibition Details

KAMIKA BIN is a paper waste bin remade from sludge generated in our own paper-making process. About 80 tons of it arises each year from making automotive gasket and insulation materials. As a composite of fibers, minerals and rubber it cannot go to normal paper recycling, but returning it to our own paper machine turns the waste back into the product. Raw waste samples are also shown.

Environmentally conscious aspects
  • Improving materials used in manufacturing
  • Reducing energy/water use during manufacturing
  • Reducing waste/emissions during manufacturing
  • Reducing the amount of waste at the time of disposal

Summary of Business

Founded in 1946 in Ogawa-machi, Saitama, Sekine Industrial Sealing manufactures specialty functional papers and gasket materials. Drawing on the 1,300-year tradition of Hosokawa washi papermaking, the company produces and sells automotive gasket materials (beater sheet and oil sheet), heat insulation, sound insulation and electrical insulation materials. Its beater sheet holds roughly 80% of the domestic market, and the company works with around 170 automakers and suppliers in Japan and overseas. More recently it has worked on upcycling the sludge generated in its own manufacturing process, launching KAMIKA BIN, a paper waste bin remade on its own paper machine. Guided by its corporate philosophy, the company aims to combine manufacturing with the circulation of materials in its region.
